FLEXIZYME at the 27th International Symposium on Plant Lipids (ISPL)

FLEXIZYME at the 27th International Symposium on Plant Lipids (ISPL)

From 5 to 10 July 2026, FLEXIZYME was represented at the International Symposium on Plant Lipids (ISPL), held in Málaga, Spain. During the event IG-CSIC presented a scientific poster entitled:

“Sustainable feedstocks for the enzymatic production of bio-based fatty amines”

The objectives of the analysis presented was to evaluate sustainable fatty acids and amino sources suitable for the enzymatic production of bio-based fatty amines, as well as to design efficient bioprocess pre-treatments for the selected feedstocks.

The study assessed different lipid raw materials and enzymes to optimise free fatty acid recovery, while hydrolisis strategies using legume by-products were investigated to maximise free amino acid availability. Results showed that Lipura Split achieved the highest hydrolisis performance, achieving up to 90%
recovery of free fatty acids; while lentils were identified as a promising sustainable protein source.

The findings contribute to the development of greener oleochemical processes and support the transition toward circular and bio-based industrial value chains.

Building knowledge through the LCA workshop

As part of the conference activities, NTUA and IPSEN organised an interactive workshop:

“Life Cycle Assessment as a Decision-Support Tool for Sustainable Innovation”

The workshop, facilitated by Lazaros Karaoglanoglou (NTUA), Pantelis Manakas (NTUA), and Antonis Kokossis (NTUA), introduced participants to LCA and its application as a decision-support tool for sustainable process and product development. It focused on four key themes:

  • LCA fundamentals;
  • System thinking and hotspot identification;
  • Hands-on modelling and scenario analysis;
  • The transition from ex-post assessment to Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD).

The session provided participants practical tools for evaluating alternative technologies and implementation scenarios, while encouraging dicussion on real-world industrial challenges and opportunities for more sustainable chemical and biobased production systems.

FLEXIZYME Online Masterclass: Exploring the Journey from Feedstocks to Sustainable Products

On 14 October 2026, the online masterclass “From Feedstocks to Sustainable Products: Circular Bioeconomy, Biotechnology and Biorefineries in Action with FLEXIZYME” will bring together Flexizyme consortium partners from across Europe to explore how innovative biotechnological approaches can transform renewable resources and industrial side streams into sustainable, high-value products.

The event will provide participants with an accessible yet scientifically grounded introduction to the key concepts behind FLEXIZYME, showcasing how circular economy principles, biotechnology, and biorefinery strategies can contribute to more sustainable industrial processes.

The programme

The session will open with a welcome introduction by Ioannis Fallas (CluBE), followed by an overview of FLEXIZYME’s value chain and circular economy approach presented by Annabel Serpico (ITENE).

The first technical session will focus on upstream processes and feedstock treatment, with contributions from Maria Victoria Ruiz-Mendez and Justo Jimenez (IG-CSIC). The discussion will then move to the midstream and downstream stages of the FLEXIZYME value chain, addressing biotechnological processes, enzyme engineering, and downstream processing through presentations by Mar Tronch (ITENE), Ognjen Pećanac (GECCO), and Matilde Rizza (UNIPI)The final session will explore the pathway towards industrial application, covering process design, scale-up, sustainability assessment, and final product development with insights from Gustavo Quillo (PDC), Zsófia Kádár (BBEPP), Lazaros Karaoglanoglou (NTUA), and Sergio Mastroianni (SYENSQO)The masterclass will also feature an intervention from the EU-funded project GoodByOFLEXIZYME’s sister project, providing additional perspectives and insights on complementary research and innovation activities.

FLEXIZYME at the15th Panhellenic Scientific Conference of Chemical Engineering

FLEXIZYME at the 15th Panhellenic Scientific Conference of Chemical Engineering

Earlier this month, FLEXIZYME was presented at the 15th Panhellenic Scientific Conference of Chemical Engineering (PESXM15), hosted by the Technical University of Crete from 3–5 June 2026.

As one of Greece’s leading events in the field of chemical engineering, PESXM15 brought together researchers, academics, industry professionals, and students to exchange knowledge and discuss the latest developments in sustainable technologies, process engineering, and industrial innovation.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to showcase how FLEXIZYME is contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy through innovative biotechnology and sustainability-driven process design.

Poster Presentation: “Reframing Agro-Industrial Wastes: Designing Sustainable Bio-based Value Chains via Ex-Ante Life Cycle Assessment”

Presented by L. Karaoglanoglou and A. Kokossis, the poster explored the valorisation of agro-industrial waste streams through the design of sustainable bio-based value chains.

The work highlighted the application of Ex-Ante Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a decision-support tool during the early stages of process development. By evaluating environmental impacts before technologies reach maturity, Ex-Ante LCA helps identify potential hotspots, guide process optimisation, and support the development of more sustainable production pathways.

This approach is closely aligned with FLEXIZYME’s objective of transforming side-stream materials into high-value bio-based products while ensuring environmental sustainability is considered from the outset.

Participation in PESXM15 offered a valuable platform to engage with the scientific community and share insights on the role of sustainability assessment in biotechnology and industrial innovation.

The presented work demonstrates how integrating environmental considerations into the earliest phases of technology development can help accelerate the transition towards circular and resource-efficient production systems.
