FLEXIZYME at SUSTENS SUSCHEME 2
From 28 to 30 June 2026, FLEXIZYME was represented at the SuSChemE SUSTENS2 Conference, held in Athens, Greece. The conference provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge and showcase the objectives and values of the project.
Through the participation of ITENE, CluBE, and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), FLEXIZYME was presented to an international audience, promoting its innovative approach and strengthening connections with wider research communities.
Throughout the conference, FLEXIZYME had a dedicated stand, offering participants the opportunity to learn more about the project’s objectives, explore its innovative approach, and connect with the experts from the consortium.


FLEXIZYME contributions to the conference programme
The conference programme featured contributions from FLEXIZYME partners, showcasing the project and its work on sustainable biotechnology.
Annabel Serpico (ITENE), presented the project and its vision and chaired a session dedicated to sustainability and industrial biotechnology.
Lazaros Karaoglanoglou (NTUA) presented recent work on integrating Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) within FLEXIZYME project, showing how sustainability assessment can be integrated into technology development to identify sustainable bio-based production pathways.


Building knowledge through the LCA workshop
As part of the conference activities, NTUA and IPSEN organised an interactive workshop:
“Life Cycle Assessment as a Decision-Support Tool for Sustainable Innovation”
The workshop, facilitated by Lazaros Karaoglanoglou (NTUA), Pantelis Manakas (NTUA), and Antonis Kokossis (NTUA), introduced participants to LCA and its application as a decision-support tool for sustainable process and product development. It focused on four key themes:
- LCA fundamentals;
- System thinking and hotspot identification;
- Hands-on modelling and scenario analysis;
- The transition from ex-post assessment to Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD).
The session provided participants practical tools for evaluating alternative technologies and implementation scenarios, while encouraging dicussion on real-world industrial challenges and opportunities for more sustainable chemical and biobased production systems.
