FLEXIZYME at the 15th Panhellenic Scientific Conference of Chemical Engineering

Earlier this month, FLEXIZYME was presented at the 15th Panhellenic Scientific Conference of Chemical Engineering (PESXM15), hosted by the Technical University of Crete from 3–5 June 2026.

As one of Greece’s leading events in the field of chemical engineering, PESXM15 brought together researchers, academics, industry professionals, and students to exchange knowledge and discuss the latest developments in sustainable technologies, process engineering, and industrial innovation.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to showcase how FLEXIZYME is contributing to the transition towards a more sustainable and circular bioeconomy through innovative biotechnology and sustainability-driven process design.

Poster Presentation: “Reframing Agro-Industrial Wastes: Designing Sustainable Bio-based Value Chains via Ex-Ante Life Cycle Assessment”

Presented by L. Karaoglanoglou and A. Kokossis, the poster explored the valorisation of agro-industrial waste streams through the design of sustainable bio-based value chains.

The work highlighted the application of Ex-Ante Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a decision-support tool during the early stages of process development. By evaluating environmental impacts before technologies reach maturity, Ex-Ante LCA helps identify potential hotspots, guide process optimisation, and support the development of more sustainable production pathways.

This approach is closely aligned with FLEXIZYME’s objective of transforming side-stream materials into high-value bio-based products while ensuring environmental sustainability is considered from the outset.

Participation in PESXM15 offered a valuable platform to engage with the scientific community and share insights on the role of sustainability assessment in biotechnology and industrial innovation.

The presented work demonstrates how integrating environmental considerations into the earliest phases of technology development can help accelerate the transition towards circular and resource-efficient production systems.
