FLEXIZYME at WCCE12: Spotlight on Sustainability in Global Chemical Engineering

From July 14–18, 2025, Beijing hosted the 12th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (WCCE12): a global flagship event in the chemical engineering world that welcomed over 6,000 participants from more than 50 countries. Under the theme “Paradigm Shifting in Chemical Engineering for Global Challenges,” the event addressed future innovation, sustainability, and smart transformation across the sector.

FLEXIZYME was proudly represented by Professor Kokossis (Professor of Process Systems Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens), who was invited to present a dedicated talk on the project’s life cycle sustainability work. His presentation, titled “An Ex-ante LCA & SSbD Approach of the Supply Chain Design for the Enzymatic Fatty Amine Production Using the FLEXIZYME Methodology,” focused on the early-stage environmental and economic assessment of FLEXIZYME’s novel biotechnological platform.

Key Insights from the Presentation:

  • Preliminary Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) results highlight FLEXIZYME’s clear environmental advantages over conventional waste-to-energy and nitrile-based pathways.
  • Compared to fossil-based surfactants available on the market, the FLEXIZYME method shows tangible sustainability benefits, reinforcing its relevance in cosmetic, detergent, and fertilizer applications.
  • The ex-ante LCA framework enables informed decision-making early in the development process—guiding feedstock choices, supply chain configurations, and technology design.
  • Future work will expand with lab-scale data, refined regional parameters, and sensitivity analysis to build a robust, low-impact roadmap for industrial-scale production.

The presentation marked a significant milestone in FLEXIZYME’s visibility among the global chemical engineering community. Despite being in an early phase of the project, the opportunity to present at such a prestigious international forum highlights the scientific credibility and sustainability promise of the initiative.

Stay tuned as we continue refining our methodology and sharing updates that contribute to a greener and more circular future for industrial chemistry.
