Who is National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)?
NTUA contributes to FLEXIZYME through its Industrial Process Systems Engineering (IPSEN) Research Unit, which brings over 30 years of expertise in process systems design, modeling, optimization, and sustainability assessment. IPSEN is deeply embedded in the European innovation landscape, collaborating with industry and participating in strategic networks such as the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), EERA Bioenergy, and SusChem GR.
Their strong track record in process engineering and life cycle analysis (LCA) makes them a key driver of FLEXIZYME’s commitment to sustainability, circularity, and economic viability.
NTUA’s Role in FLEXIZYME
NTUA plays a leading role in Work Package 7, focusing on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and the holistic evaluation of circularity. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing Life Cycle Inventories (LCIs) based on experimental data and databases, to evaluate environmental impacts, such as toxicity, climate change, and resource depletion—using advanced tools like SimaPro, Gabi, and CCalc.
- Supporting the techno-economic analysis by validating process simulations, estimating production costs (CAPEX and OPEX), and building robust business case scenarios for the most promising biorefinery configurations.
- Leading the assessment of circularity and industrial symbiosis potential, exploring reuse and recycling strategies, by-product utilization, and synergies with local industries to quantify economic and environmental benefits.
By integrating environmental and financial performance indicators, NTUA ensures that FLEXIZYME is not only technically sound but also aligned with real-world sustainability and market demands.
