Introducing IG-CSIC: Advancing Sustainable Feedstock Solutions in FLEXIZYME
The Instituto de la Grasa (IG-CSIC) is a historic and highly specialized research center in Food Science and Technology, located at the Pablo de Olavide University campus in Seville, Spain. Part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), it is one of the oldest research institutes in the CSIC network, established in 1947, and has maintained a leading role in the study of food lipids, oleaginous products, and agri-food sustainability ever since.
While originally focused on olive oil and table olives, IG-CSIC has evolved to address the demands of a changing food and biotechnology landscape. Today, the institute contributes to fields such as healthy and safe food production, sustainable processing technologies, and raw material valorization. Its work is characterized by multidisciplinary research, close collaboration with agribusiness stakeholders, and active participation in national and international scientific initiatives.
IG-CSIC plays a key role in supporting Spain’s agrifood and biotechnology sectors, advancing both scientific knowledge and industrial innovation.
IG-CSIC’s Role in FLEXIZYME
In the FLEXIZYME project, IG-CSIC leads Work Package 3 (WP3) – Upstream: Sustainable Feedstock Treatment for Fatty Amine Production.
With its strong background in lipid and protein characterization, IG-CSIC is responsible for analyzing fat- and protein-rich by-products that serve as raw materials in the biotechnological production of fatty amines. The team applies advanced analytical methods to study the composition, quality, and suitability of these feedstocks, ensuring that only the most promising materials are used in the process.
Key contributions include:
- Comprehensive characterization of oils, fats, and proteins from industrial residues
- Design of pre-treatment processes that convert raw materials into usable substrates for enzymatic reactions
- Collaboration with other FLEXIZYME partners to select the most efficient input streams for fatty amine synthesis
Through their upstream work, IG-CSIC ensures that FLEXIZYME starts with a strong, sustainable foundation, enabling the project to deliver high-quality, bio-based products from underutilized resources.
